Prenatal Care

Midwifery care, by its very nature - partnering with women - requires that we see each woman as unique, then respect and nurture each individual experience. With midwifery care the woman is the center of the childbirth experience and a great influence on the health and well being of herself and her family.

Prenatal appointments are comprehensive but relaxed and we place a big emphasis on prevention and education. By maintaining healthy lifestyles; eating right, exercising and avoiding harmful substances and stress; most of our clients remain low-risk. We spend the first half of the appointment talking about these types of things. The physical exam follows with blood pressure, urine dip, measuring the baby’s growth, determining the position and listening to the heartbeat. Plenty of time is allowed for you to ask questions.

Personalized care is the cornerstone of our practice. Statistics show that the more comfortable a woman is with her caregiver, the better the outcome. That’s why at the Oaks House you and your midwife will spend about 1 ½ hours for the initial visit and 50 minutes for subsequent prenatal appointments. By spending a great deal of time with each other, a partnership develops, which involves mutual trust and respect, knowledge and skill sharing. Knowing our clients is important to us and by becoming familiar with you and your family, our ability to meet your needs is enhanced.

We encourage loved ones to be part of your visits. As a mother of four, I really enjoy children and let them help with things like measuring your tummy and listening to the baby. Getting to know your entire family makes it easier when we come into your home for the birth. Our motto is “Why spend an hour waiting for an obstetrician when you can be spending that hour with your midwife!”
