Nutritional Counseling
Working at CHOC in the mid 80’s I heard a very insightful statement.
The neonatologist I worked with declared that most of the NICU’s premies
wouldn’t be there if their mothers had only eaten better. It wasn’t
infections, it wasn’t birth defects, it was nutrition! That profound
statement impacted me and led me to Dr. Brewers research regarding nutrition
during pregnancy. Healthy pregnancies and healthy babies are the result of
a healthy diet.
The best time to start nourishing your body for pregnancy is actually months
before conception. Deficiencies in pregnant women have been linked to many
pregnancy-related complications including morning sickness, anemia, gestational
diabetes and preeclampsia.
At your initial prenatal visit we will ask you to keep a 1-week diet diary.
At the next visit we will review it and help you determine what your nutritional
strengths and weaknesses are and what areas you can improve in. We’ll
also discuss a vitamin and supplement regimen as well. Throughout your pregnancy
we will ask you about what you’re eating, your cravings and reiterate
of the importance of a healthy, well-balanced diet.
Your baby is what you eat!
