Maidens By His Design Classes

As parents prepare their older children for adolescence, one important component of this parental teaching is a mother's instruction on her coming-of-age daughter about her cycle. Most parents simply give their children the biological "facts" about menstruation. But suppose you could introduce your daughter to this event in the context of God's beautiful design? The beginning of menstruation is a significant time in a young girl’s life and it should be a time of understanding and awareness, rather than fear, scorn or mistruths.

In the Maiden By His Design course, Lori will lead young girls ages 8-15 and their mothers through a unique study designed to explore how God created women, how the body was designed to have a menstrual cycle, the stages of the cycle and the factors that can affect it. While this course does NOT speak about sexuality per se, the course does prepare girls to understand the concept of charting their cycle. It can provide a wonderful teaching moment for moms to speak in private to their daughters about the wonderful "secret" of marriage, or it can simply educate girls who are nearing the age of menstruation but who are not yet ready for in-depth knowledge.

Girls will understand and accept the changes their bodies will go through as well as the “gear” they’ll need. Lori also touches on the importance of eating nutritionally and healthy lifestyles. The whole process of menses is clearly understood through history, definitions, diagrams, illustrations, and thorough explanations and Lori keeps the class fun and creative.

This five-week course includes a student workbook, a menstrual charting system as well as a book of short devotionals for the girls to read during the week of their menstrual period. Maidens by His Design FAQ

What age is appropriate for this workshop?
This is geared toward young ladies from 8 on up – and mothers will learn as well. In our society, girls can begin their cycle as early as 8. Some of the terms and information will go over their heads, yes – but it is never too early to introduce concepts and teach them to be aware that God made their bodies a certain way for His glory.

Will you cover sex or any type of birth control?
NO – we never discuss this issue and we do not introduce the male “parts” or terminology either – we believe we can teach the young ladies about their body without having to go there, but instead leave that to you as the mother (or parents) to cover in private.

Is this type of class REALLY needed?
YES – because we, as mothers, are well-meaning moms, aren’t we? Time is of the essence. We need accountability, we need support, we need resources to teach this from a Christian perspective. When asking women all over (who were raised in Christian homes) if they were taught this subject matter – 98% of them said NO, they were not. They were left to wonder and read the inserts in the box. We can do better than this for our daughters. By doing this and teaching them now, it will help prepare them for the other cycles in their lives - Maternity and Menopause. It all begins now - we can get our daughters comfortable and knowledgeable about their cycle, before they even come upon those other two cycles.

What is particularly unique about this course is the emphasis on the goodness and beauty of something that our culture thinks is merely a "pain in the neck" or an unfair burden on women: menstruation. She urges women to not give into these sad attitudes but to approach the onset of menstruation as an opportunity to get to know and understand your body and your health more deeply, and to give thanks to God for how you are made. Menstruation should not be seen as a curse or a burden, but as a season of life given to women by God as a blessing. A woman's fertility is compared in Scripture to a beautiful garden. This course will teach you and your daughter how to care for her garden - what it needs, how to enrich it and nourish it for her cycle, setting a foundation for the rest of her life and health.

Will my daughter be embarrassed taking this course with other girls?
No, I do not believe so. At the beginning of class I ask “Who is a little embarrassed to be here today to learn about this?” and maybe one or two will raise their hands (and I am sure there are others not raising their hands) but I quickly say “This is exactly why we are doing this course.” We are offering this course so that it isn’t taboo anymore, so that girls and women can begin to support one another during this time. We encourage discretion at all times and for them not to discuss this issue with just anyone – but encourage them to use this class as an opportunity to ask questions and be comfortable and safe in doing so. Toward the end of the class the daughters are having SUCH a good time together. They will never forget their experience of taking this course, LORD willing.

Can mothers take this class by themselves?
Yes, Mothers learn as much as the daughters. If they would like to attend then go home and teach the course, that is fine. We want others to take this course and teach it. If that is one on one with your daughter/s or if it is with a group of young ladies in your church or community – great! We’ll help you get started.
